The Union Army was led by General George C. Meade. General Meade replaced General George McClellan. McClellan did a wonderful job of training the Army of the Potomac into one of the world's finest armies. However, McClellan was never able to muster up the courage to send his army into perilous battle. McClellan's inhibitions allowed Robert E. Lee, the commander to the Army of Northern Virginia to invade the North. Lee chose Gettysburg. Below is a picture of General Meade.

The United States of America; The Union Army

Upon hearing of the invasion of the North, General Meade positioned the Army of the Potomac in defense of the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Other notable participants in the battle on the Northern Side include Abner Doubleday, the inventor of baseball, and George Custard, the general famous for his loss at the battle of Littlebig Horn.
